The theme for Montage 2011 “What If?” is specially designed and chosen to encourage creative thinking through photography. Through the theme, photographers are given the freedom to express themselves through what they perceive of any situation or object and tell their own story. Competition participants are encouraged to take photos which will evoke emotions, provoke thinking and lead viewers to interpret the photos from their individual perspective. Through the series of workshops and seminar, we hope to allow participants gain a deeper insight into photography and set them thinking about the exciting world of photography.
2011 presents a new decade of endless possibilities for us. The question of “What If?” (Possibilities) poses itself to us in special ways that only photographs could express, that we ourselves as mere humans cannot. Photography, after all, is all about story telling.
This year, the Photographic Society of NUS (NUSPS) wants you to tell us your story, of possibilities!
Each person bears a subjective interpretation to photographs and photography; it is through the power of suggestion that our works can be viewed as more than just captured moments in space and time. As photographers, we possess the ability to steer our audience into a specific directions of thought, or to provoke an inquisitive psyche upon them. We can invoke emotions and question conventions through photography, and of which, ultimately we can incite action, reaction and even change.
Photography is organic, and constantly evolving. We hope to let the stories tell themselves dynamically, yet meaningfully. More importantly, we hope to let the photographs immerse our audience into realities they have witnessed and chosen to portray.
