Don’t Let Themes Lead You by the Nose

By: Kaying Celeste

When asked to take a photo with a theme, most people would either feel clueless about what to take, or have too many ideas running through their head. Below are some steps which I would normally take when placed in such a situation.

Step #1: Brainstorm

Do not just run around with your camera with the first idea that pops in your head. Making a list of all my ideas helps me keep track of them. Try not to filter out any of them at this stage as you never know how they will turn out.

Step #2: Google it!

If you are stuck with ZERO ideas, try google-ling the theme to gain inspiration. Looking at photos with a similar theme helps me to better conceptualize.

Step #3: Draw

I may not draw well but it certainly helps when you put your ideas down in the form of pictures. You can think better about the kind of perspective and what exactly you are looking out for in your photos.

Step #4: Shoot it

It’s time to move away from the drawing board! By taking actual photos, you can experiment with different subjects, composition and angles. Don’t just take one shot. Take a few and play around with your ideas.

Step #5: Share it

Bringing a few photographer friends along would be highly constructive as they can provide you with comments and suggestions. It’s nice to have someone shooting along with you especially if you are shy about shooting alone.

Step #6: Have fun!

Most importantly, you must enjoy the process! So at the end of the day, even if I do not end up with a photo I want, at least I had a lot of fun :)
